#578 Large Old Dan-Bete Gre Bird War Mask Ivory Coast 27"H

This African Dan-Bete Gre Mask is a rare and exquisite piece of tribal art from Ivory Coast. With a height of 27" width  of 8.5" and depth of 7", it showcases the unique craftsmanship of Bete carvers. This particular type of mask, known as gre or nyabwa, features exaggerated facial features such as a large protruding mouth, facial protuberances, and an elongated nose resembling a bird. Traditionally, it was used during ceremonies marking the end of conflicts and for sessions of customary justice. It was also worn by warriors to instill fear and provide magical protection in battle. Today, it is still worn for various ceremonies, including entertainment dances.
